Now, it appears, it has happened with the Baraboo News Republic. On the day when the sports page reports on the Baraboo Riptide’s impressive streak of 57 consecutive dual meet victories, it happened. There was “Something in the Water” at Cross Plains on Saturday. It was a Stingray team that was talented and hungry for a chance to upset the defending conference champions. For the first time since July of 1999, before some of the current Riptide swimmers were even born, the team tasted defeat at a dual meet. The Riptide were riding another perfect season at 5-0 heading into Cross Plains (4-1). When the pool settled and the final scores were tallied, the Stingrays emerged with a hard fought victory, 357.5 to 304.5. Though it was a swim meet, it was more like a prize fight with each team claiming the lead throughout the meet. The Stingrays began strong, winning the four of the first six medley relays, aided by a disqualification of the Riptide 9-10 boys. The Riptide responded and finished strong, sweeping the 13-14 and 15-18 age groups to post a 42-28 lead after the first event. The Freestyle saw Cross Plains win seven races, led by UW recruit Luke Lengfeld in his final home meet. Noah Larson, Catherine Livingston and Tanner Craker won their respective races. The Stingrays finished the event with a 83.5 to 76.5 lead. The Riptide reclaimed the lead after the Backstroke as Brian Cormican, Emily O’Rourke, Kody Mjelde, Shannon Keeling and Andrew Mering led the charge with victories. The Riptide added to their slim lead of 167.5 to 154.5 after the Individual Medley. Brian Cormican, Gemma Pillsbury, Aleah Kuchta, Shannon Keeling and Seth Zunker claimed first prizes. The lead slipped back to only five points after the Breaststroke. Cormican, Pillsbury, Zunker, and Blair Murphy were the only Riptide swimmers to win their races. The Long Freestyle proved to be the team’s strongest event of the day. Livingston, Craker, and Pillsbury added to their win totals. Joining them were Kayla Hanson and Kayla Steinhorst. After the event, the Riptide enjoyed their largest lead of the day, 259.5 to 242.5. Then came the Butterfly. The Stingrays dominated the event, winning nine of ten races. Only Ellie Ruefer won for the Riptide. Heading into the final event of the day, the Freestyle Relays, the Stingrays now held an eleven point advantage, 301.5 to 290.5. The Riptide would have to win six of the ten races to keep their streak in tack. Each race was greeted with a cheering crowd on their feet as swimmers raced side by side for a chance at victory. With the exception of the 8 & under division, the races were decided by less than five seconds. The Stingrays could see victory in their grasps as they swept the 8 & under and 11-12 divisions. With the crowd erupting, the Stingrays won the most dramatic race of the day as they edged the Riptide 13-14 girls by 0.09 seconds. Victory was now assured. The put the exclamation point on the meet by winning the remaining three races for the 53 point victory. “I had mixed feeling at the end of the meet.” said Head Coach Lynn Keeling. “You never like to lose. But I can remember how we felt the first time we knocked off one of the “big teams”. This meet was so much fun. I wish it was this exciting every weekend, where the outcome is decided on the final events”. “This is going to make the Conference meet even more exciting. Although the scoring is different at conference as compared to the dual meets, we will have to step it up if we are going to retain our crown.” added Keeling. But before the Riptide look to defending their conference title, they still have one dual meet remaining. They can still win a share of the Tri-County Conference Dual Meet title when they host the Spring Green Dolphins at the Campbell Park Pool on Saturday. 2007 Baraboo Riptide vs. Cross Plains Stingrays results Baraboo Riptide (473) vs. Spring Green Dolphins (189) 7/21/2007 Back on Track. His anchor on the medley relay was incredible.” The Freestyle event saw a number of Riptide swimmers cap off their fine season with gold medals. Noah Larson, Catherine Livingston, and Eric Thompson won their respective titles. The 9-10 boys nearly made it a sweep as Tanner Craker, Jesse Leatherberry and Sean Cormican finished 1-2-5 in their division.
