The Gods and Goddesses of Swimming: Tri-County
Conference Swim Meet 2009
The Baraboo Riptide Swim Team captured the second place
team trophy at this past weekend’s Tri-County Conference swim meet, held at the
Middleton High School indoor pool. The Cross Plains Stingrays hosted this
year’s meet, choosing the theme The Gods and Goddesses of Swimming. The other
six Tri-County members competing included The Wisconsin Dells Dolphins, The Sun
Prairie Piranhas, The Mount Horeb Gators, The Sauk Prairie Pool Sharks, The
Mazomanie Barracudas, and the Spring Green Dolphins.
Saturday’s preliminary heats saw the best of over 1100
swimmers from the Tri-County Conference racing for the top 16 spots in the
individual events in order to move on to Sunday’s final races. The relays were
also held on Sunday. “As you read the program at the Conference meet,”
commented Riptide President Don Trimmer, “the records are dominated by current
and former Riptide swimmers. It’s a tribute to the talented swimmers and
coaches that have been a part of this incredible team.”
“Overall, we swam quite well,” said Head Coach Lynn
Keeling. “There were some extremely exciting relays.” In the first event on
Sunday, the Medley Relay, the Girls 11-12 team of Andrea Noonan, Laken Murphy,
Emma Grogan and Hannah Mueller took first place, beating rival Cross Plains by
just under a second. The Boys 11-12 Medley Relay team of Brian Cormican, Austin
Miller, Tanner Craker, and Sean Cormican won their relay in one of the most
exciting races of the day, with anchor Sean Cormican out-touching rival Sauk
Prairie by one one-hundredth of a second. The Riptide Girls and Boys 11-12 age
groups had a spectacular day swimming overall, with each winning the first place
trophy for the most points in their age groups.
Four Riptide teams earned silver medals for their second
place finishes in the Medley Relay: the Girls 9-10 team of Sophia Oettinger,
Abby Hennessy, Zoe Herdina and Alison Krug, the Boys 9-10 team of Devin Fichter,
connor Grogan, Noah Larson and Paddy O’Rourke, the Girls 13-14 team of Sharri
Waldron, Gemma Pillsbury, Karli Didrickson and Samantha Terrry, and the Boys
15-18 team of Michael Prochaska, Kody Mjelde, Benji Ruefer and Joe Grogan. The
Boys 13-14 team took third place with swims by Sam Trotter, Matthew Garcia, Alex
Noonan and Daniel O’Rourke.
In the next event, the Freestyle, two Riptide swimmers took
first place. Hannah Vittengl earned a gold medal in the Girls 8& Under 25-yard
Freestyle, and Hannah Mueller took home her gold in the Girls 11-12 50-yard
Freestyle race. Catherine Livingston and Sean Cormican earned bronze medals for
their third place finishes in the 11-12 50-yard Freestyle races.
In the Backstroke, Sophia Oettinger took second place in
the 9-10 age group, as did Shannon Keeling for the 15-18 Girls. Kody Mjelde
took home a bronze medal for the 15-18 Boys.
Shannon Keeling broke her own record in the Girls 15-18
Individual Medley, swimming over a second faster than the record she set last
year, and brought home a gold medal. “It was bittersweet for me as a Mom to
watch my daughter Shannon swim for the last time,” said Coach Keeling. “She
went out in style with best times. It’s hard to believe that my last child has
finished their swimming career. Watching them has been an awesome experience,
one I will treasure forever.”
Other medal winners in the Individual Medley included Alex
Noonan earning a silver medal for the 13-14 Boys, and Noah Larson ,Boys 9-10,
Tanner Craker, Boys 11-12, and Gemma Pillsbury, Girls 13-14, taking home bronze
medals.
In the Breaststroke, Laken Murphy dominated in the Girls
11-12 race, winning by more than a second ahead of her closest competitor, while
teammate Isabel Schmelzer earned third place. Austin Miller and Kody Mjelde won
silver medals for the Riptide 11-12 and 15-18 Boys, respectively, while Shannon
Keeling again took gold, winning the Girls 15-18 Breaststroke in her last swim
of the day. Gemma Pillsbury brought home a bronze medal for the 13-14 Girls in
the Breaststroke.
In the Long Freestyle, Noah Larson came from behind with a
kick in the final 25 yards to win the 100-yard Freestyle for the Boys 9-10 age
group. Riptide swimmers Hannah Vittengl, Catherine Livingston, Tanner Craker,
and Gemma Pillsbury earned silver medals in the Long Freestyle, while Alex
Noonan finished in third place.
Sophia Oettinger brought home a gold medal in the final
individual event of the day, the Butterfly, an event that she had not swum all
year. Oettinger came into the race with a “No Time” listed and won the event
for the Girls 9-10 group. Other medal winners for the Riptide included Noah
Larson, Tanner Craker, and Alex Noonan winning silver, and Emma Grogan a bronze.
Two Riptide teams won their relay races in the last event,
the Freestyle Relays. In a close and exciting race, the Riptide team of Giselle
Riem, Sarah Anderson, Caroline Schick and Hannah Vittengl swam to first place
for the 8 & Under Girls. Assistant Coach Raegen Trimmer had nothing but praise
for the girls. “I was so proud of our 8 & Under Girls. Those girls have been
working so hard all year. Most of the time, they practiced with the 9-10 year
olds. The Free Relay team deserved to win that race.”
In the Girls 11-12 Freestyle Relay, the team of Hannah
Mueller, Laken Murphy, Emma Grogan and Catherine Livingston dominated in their
race, winning by half the length of the pool. The Boys 11-12 team of Joseph
Brognano, Collin Feld, Patrick Sandoval and Sean Cormican swam to a second place
finish.
The Baraboo Riptide finished their Duel Meet Season with a
6-1 record, second in the Tri-County conference.

Baraboo Riptide (348) vs. Sun Prairie Piranhas (314)
7/18/2009
It was a battle of the giants last Saturday at the Baraboo
outdoor pool, and while Sun Prairie brought the larger team, Baraboo Riptide
kept their nose above water with a win of 348 to 314.
Baraboo Riptide President Don Trimmer said “In visiting
with the President of the Sun Prairie Piranhas, we determined that this had to
be the largest duel meet ever between two Tri-County Conference teams. Sun
Prairie brought 180 swimmer and we had close to 150 kids for a total of over 320
individuals participating in the meet.”
“The growth of a number of the Tri-County Conference teams
over the past few years has been tremendous,” said Trimmer. “Sun Prairie has
230 swimmers, we have 180, Cross Plains has 170-180, and Mount Horeb has
exploded from a small team to over 173 swimmers this year.”
The Baraboo Riptide leapt to an early lead winning seven of
the ten Medley Relay races. Taking first place for the 9-10 Girls and Boys were
the teams of Sophia Oettinger, Abby Hennessy, Zoe Herdina and Alison Krug, and
Devin Fichter, Connor Grogan, Noah Larson and Paddy O’Rourke. The 11-12 Girls
and Boys teams also took first, with swims by Andrea Noonan, Laken Murphy, Emma
Grogan and Hannah Mueller, and Brian Cormican, Austin Miller, Tanner Craker and
Sean Cormican. The 13-14 Girls team of Sharri Waldron, Gemma Pillsbury, Karli
Didrickson and Emily Brewer won their relay, as did the 15-18 Girls and Boys
teams of Emily Thompson, Blair Murphy, Lacey Craker and Devin Nelson, and
Michael Prochaska, Kody Mjelde, Benji Ruefer and Joe Grogan.
While the team scores were close through some of the early
events, The Riptide remained ahead throughout the meet. Blue ribbon swimmers in
the first individual event, the Freestyle, were Sarah Anderson, Paddy O’Rourke,
Hannah Mueller, and Sean Cormican, while in the next event, the Backstroke, top
finishers were Sophia Oettinger, Connor Grogan, Andrea Noonan, Brian Cormican,
Emily Thompson, and Michael Prochaska.
The Riptide won six of the eight Individual Medley races,
with top times by Noah Larson, Andrea Noonan, Tanner Craker, Gemma Pillsbury,
Alex Noonan, and Kody Mjelde.
In the Breastroke event, Laken Murphy, Collin Feld, Gemma
Pillsbury, and Kody Mjelde took first place. The winners for their age groups in
the Long Freestyle event were Hannah Vittengl, Sophia Oettinger, Noah Larson,
Catherine Livingston, Tanner Craker, Gemma Pillsbury, and Alex Noonan.
In the last individual event of the meet, the Butterfly,
Caroline Schick, Noah Larson, Tanner Craker, and Alex Noonan brought home first
place points for The Riptide team.
In the Freestyle Relay, the 8 & Under Girls team of Giselle
Riem, Sarah Anderson, Caroline Schick, and Hannah Vittengl took first place, as
did the 11-12 Girls and Boys teams of Hannah Mueller, Laken Murphy, Emma Grogan
and Catherine Livingston, and Joseph Brognano, Collin Feld, Patrick Sandoval and
Sean Cormican. The teamwork of Nicholas Craker, Christopher Gasser, Daniel
Konen and Joe Grogan won the last race of the day for the 15-18 Boys in their
Freestyle Relay.
The Riptide team was buoyed by another stellar performance
by the boys in the 11-12 age group as they won all of the races in their age
category. Three swimmers – Gemma Pillsbury, Tanner Craker, and Noah Larson –
also won all four of their events for the day.
This Saturday and Sunday, The Riptide team will travel to
the Middleton High School indoor pool to compete in the annual Tri-County
Conference Swim Meet, hosted this year by the Cross Plains Stingrays. The
individual preliminary races will be on Saturday, with individual finals and the
relay races on Sunday. Races start at 9:00 a.m. on both days.

A riptide of strong swimming propelled The Baraboo Riptide to a 445 to 217

Baraboo Riptide (437) vs. Spring Green Dolphins
(225)
7/1/2009
The cool temperatures could not stop the Baraboo Riptide
from heating up the Campbell Park Pool on Wednesday night with a convincing 437
to 225 victory over the Spring Green Dolphins. The victory moves the team to an
impressive 4-1 on the season.
With temperatures hovering in the low 60’s, the Riptide
swimmers got off to a hot start by winning nine of the ten Medley Relays to post
an early 63 to 7 lead. The closest race was the 13-14 boys team of Sam Trotter,
Matthew Garcia, Alex Noonan, and Daniel O’Rourke who edged their counterparts by
less than a second.
The Riptide added to their lead after the Freestyle event
as Sarah Anderson, Hannah Mueller, Sean Cormican, Samantha Terry, Emily Thompson
and Joe Grogan won their respective races.
The Backstroke brought more wins for the Riptide as Giselle
Riem, Sophia Oettinger, Andrea Noonan, Brian Cormican, and Shannon Keeling swam
to victory.
Any chance for a Dolphins comeback ended during the
Individual Medley, as the Riptide swimmers dominated the event by winning all
eight races. Winners included Sophia Oettinger, Noah Larson, Andrea Noonan,
Brian Cormican, Gemma Pillsbury, Alex Noonan, Shannon Keeling and Kody Mjelde.
Senior Shannon Keeling capped off her Dual Meet career by
winning her third event of the evening in the 15-18 girls Breaststroke. “I
can’t believe that it’s over” said Keeling who has been swimming with the
Riptide since she was 5 years old. Giselle Riem, Gemma Pillsbury and Kody Mjelde
claimed their second blue ribbons during the event while Laken Murphy, Collin
Feld and Matthew Garcia won their first individual award.
With the lights shinning on the pool’s water, the Riptide
continued their night of dominance during the Long Freestyle. Hannah Vittengl
got things rolling for the 8 & under girls. With only a loss in the 8 & under
boy’s race, the Riptide rolled to victories, led by Oettinger, Larson, Catherine
Livingston, Tanner Craker, Pillsbury, Alex Noonan, Ellie Ruefer and Mjelde.
The Dolphins were able to salvage some points during the
Butterfly as they edged the Riptide, 6 to 4. Victorious for Baraboo were Hannah
Vittengl, Tanner Craker, Alex Noonan, and Benji Ruefer.
The meet finished with each team splitting the Freestyle
Relays.
The Riptide will be back in action on Wednesday night, July
8th, with a scrimmage against the Reedsburg Raging Rapids at the
Campbell Park Pool.

Baraboo Riptide (244) vs. Cross Plains Stingrays
(418)
6/27/2009
The Baraboo Riptide fell to the Cross Plains Stingrays, 418 to 244 at Cross
Plains on Saturday. “The 11-12 age groups, both boys and girls, were really
impressive on Saturday.” said Head Coach Lynn Keeling, “The 11-12 Girls relays
were down to the wire with Baraboo winning the Medley Relay and Cross Plains the
Free Relay, and the 11-12 Boys won all of their races. They are such a strong
group of swimmers,” said Coach Keeling, “the boys dominated in that age-group.”
Capturing The Riptide’s first wins of the day were the
11-12 Girls and Boys Medley Relay teams of Catherine Livingston, Laken Murphy,
Emma Grogan, and Hannah Mueller for the Girls, and Brian Cormican, Austin
Miller, Tanner Craker, and Sean Cormican for the Boys. The 13-14 Boys team of
Sam Trotter, Matthew Garcia, Alex Noonan, and Daniel O’Rourke won their Medley
Relay, while in the 15-18 age race, it was a thrilling tenth of a second win for
the Girls team of Emily Thompson, Blair Murphy, Shannon Keeling, and Raegen
Trimmer.
In the Freestyle event, it was again the 11-12 Boys and
15-18 Girls winning their races, with top swims by Sean Cormican and Emily
Thompson.
Taking first for The Riptide in the Backstroke were Sophia
Oettinger for the 9-10 Girls, Brian Cormican for the 11-12 Boys, Sam Trotter for
the 13-14 Boys, and Shannon Keeling for the 15-18 Girls.
In the Individual Medley races, Brian Cormican, Alex
Noonan, and Shannon Keeling earned blue ribbons for The Riptide, while The
Riptide top swimmers in the Breaststroke were Laken Murphy, Austin Miller, and
Kody Mjelde.
Catherine Livingston and Sean Cormican raced to first place
in the Long Freestyle, winning the event for the 11-12 Girls and Boys.
In the last individual event of the day, the Butterfly, the
11-12 Girls and Boys again won that event with winning swims by Emma Grogan and
Collin Feld, while in the 15-18 Girls race, Shannon Keeling took first place.
In the last event of the meet, the Freestyle Relays, The
Riptide took home two blue ribbons, with winning swims by the 11-12 Boys team of
Austin Miller, Collin Feld, Joseph Brognano, and Sean Cormican, and the 15-18
Girls team of Raegen Trimmer, Emily Thompson, Brianne Schwarz, and Danae
Ruhland.
“Both relay races for the 15-18 Girls were thrilling wins
by just tenths of a second,” said Coach Keeling.
”Those kinds of races make swimming so much fun to watch.”
The Baraboo Riptide hosts The Spring Green Dolphins
Wednesday night at the Baraboo Outdoor Pool, with the meet starting at 6:00 p.m.

Baraboo Riptide (525.5) vs. Wisconsin Dells Dolphins
(126.5) 6/20/2009
It wasn’t only the high temperatures heating up the Baraboo
Outdoor Pool on Saturday as The Baraboo Riptide beat the Wisconsin Dells
Dolphins 525.5 to 126.5.
The Dolphins felt the heat early on in the meet as The

In the first event, the Medley Relay, The Riptide won nine
of the ten races, with first-place swims by the 8&Under Girls team of Caroline
Schick, Giselle Riem, Hannah Vittengl, and Sarah Anderson, the 9-10 Girls and
Boys teams Allison Warming, Abby Hennessy, Zoe Herdina, Alison Krug, and Devin

swimmers were even hotter.” Riptide swimmers won nine of the ten Breastroke
races with wins by Giselle Riem, Sam McGlynn, Allison Warming, Laken Murphy,
Collin Feld, Gemma Pillsbury, Matthew Garcia, Blair Murphy, and Kody Mjelde.
In the Long Freestyle event, The Riptide showed both the

capturing the top three places in six of the ten races. Top finishers in the
Long Freestyle were Hannah Vittengl, Michael Wech, Alison Krug, Noah Larson,
Tanner Craker, Gemma Pillsbury, Alex Noonan, Ellie Ruefer, and Christopher
Gasser.

it out with the Stingrays, last years conference champion.

The 8 & Under Girls poured it on strong for the rest of the
day, winning all of their remaining events, with first place swims by Sarah
