2008 Tri-County Conference Championship                         7/26 & 27/2008

Three weeks ago, when the Baraboo Riptide swim team lost to Cross Plains by more than 100 points in a dual meet, they saw this coming.

It was the end of their dominance — a second-place finish in the Tri-County Conference swim meet.

The Riptide, who had won the meet in each of the last eight seasons, finished with 2,343 points to the Stingrays' 2,578 in the eight-team meet, which was held at the Baraboo Indoor Pool on Saturday and Sunday.

"You can't just win forever. Eventually it had to end," said 18-year-old swimmer David Riesch, who finished his 11th season with the Riptide at the meet. "Ever since we had the meet with them, we knew they had the advantage this season," he said. "We saw it coming."

Baraboo head coach Lynn Keeling felt her team was the underdog in the battle for first place but that they could pull out an upset win.

Cross Plains, which was undefeated during the dual meet portion of the season, while Baraboo went 5-2. It turned out that Cross Plains was just too tough. Not only that, but Sun Prairie finished a not-so-distant third place with 2,137.5 points.

It's not that the Riptide got worse, it's that the teams around them got better. "I think we inspired other teams to get better," Keeling said. "There are a lot of teams that did well."

Riesch agreed. "It was kind of disappointing," he said. "We've expected to win and we've had so many people come through. "I think the rest of the conference caught up."

Still, there were some outstanding performances in the individual races and relays that kept the Riptide a step ahead of Sun Prairie.

Shannon Keeling had a day to remember. She started off by helping her medley relay team to a first-place finish in the 15-18 age group. Along with Emily O'Rourke, Lacey Craker and Emily Thompson, that team finished in 1 minute, 55.17 seconds.

Then, Shannon Keeling blew away the field in the individual medley, hitting the wall in 1:02.69 — a new meet record and more than .80 seconds faster than the next closest swimmer. The record she broke belonged to her sister, Marlie, who put up a 1:03.16.

A time of 32.17 in the breaststroke gave Shannon Keeling first place in that event too, and she finished off with a fourth-place finish in the 200 meter freestyle, where she had a time of 2:04.54.

The big surprise winners were the Riptide 15-18 girls 200 freestyle swimmers though. Ellie Ruefer, Lacey Craker, Raegen Trimmer and Emily Thompson combined to break the meet record and post a time of 1:43.46. After Thompson hit the wall at the end of the race, the four team members looked up to their time on the score board and showed a combination of disbelief, pride and joy.

Overall, the oldest team members were the biggest reason Baraboo held onto second place. They didn't want the streak to end while they were still on the team, and they gave it their all to try and stop what seemed inevitable from happening.

"Our 15-to-18s, they're going out with a bang," coach Keeling said. "They did a great job and they really led the team."

The Riptide had 14 first-place finishes in the meet. Keeling, Eric Thompson and Alex Noonan all had two individual wins. Baraboo won four of the 10 medley relay races and went on to win the 15-18 free relay as well. Kayla Hanson, Isabel Schmelzer and Sean Cormican each won one event.

For the 78 events in the meet, that total wasn't particularly high. But Baraboo excelled in getting good scoring outside of the first-place spot, taking far more second- and third-places in the meet.

Noonan, who competed in the 11-12 age group, broke the meet record in the 100 freestyle race with a time of 58.25. He also won the backstroke with a 33.38.

Thompson, in the 13-14 group, won the butterfly in 27.66 and tied with Cross Plains' Brian Andryk for the top spot in the 50 freestyle. Both swimmers finished in 24.65.

Hanson, in the 13-14 group, took first with a time of 30.24 in the backstroke.

Schmelzer, in the 9-10 group, won the breaststroke in 41.30.

Cormican won the 100 freestyle race for the 9-10 group with a 1:10.51.

Baraboo's other three wins in the medley relays came from the girls 9-10 team, the girls 13-14 team and the boys 15-18 team.

In the girls 9-10, Schmelzer, Sophia Oettinger, Laken Murphy and Hannah Mueller raced to a time of 2:30.47.

In the girls 13-14 race, Hanson, Gemma Pillsbury, Karli Didrickson and Devin Nelson won in 2:01.98.

In the boys 15-18 medley relay, Brennan Gasser, Kody Mjelde, Seth Zunker and Joey Grogan won with a time of 1:46.59.

Baraboo Riptide (292) vs. Sun Prairie Piranhas (356)    6/7/2008

Sun Prairie Piranhas make waves for Baraboo Riptide.  The rain held off Saturday morning as two of the largest teams in the Tri-County Swimming Conference met in Sun Prairie for the first meet of the 2008 season.  With a  team of 225, the Piranhas made quite a splash against The Riptide team of 150 swimmers.

The Piranhas came out strong, winning seven of ten races in the Medley Relays, but the Riptide battled back, with a first place for the 11-12 girls team of Kara Smiley, Julia Baird, Emma Grogan and Maddie7 Mahoney.  The 13-14 boys race belonged to the team of Michael Prochaska, Jacob Hackbarth, Eric Thompson and Matthew Livingston.  The 15-18 girls won their Medley Relay with a team of Emily O’Rourke, Shannon Keeling, Ellie Ruefer and Emily Thompson.

The Freestyle was the largest event of the day, with 241 swimmers participating.  The 11-12 girls cleaned up their age group, with Kara Smiley, Catherine Livingston, and Julia Baird winning 1-2-3.  Emily Thompson won the race for the 15-18 girls.

The Backstroke event was nearly as large as the Freestyle, with 220 participants.  The Riptide showed their strength in the Backstroke, winning five of the races.  The 13-14 and 15-18 boys swept up the top three places in their age groups with Michael Prochaska, Sam Trotter, and Jacob Hackbarth taking 1-2-3 for the 13-14 boys, and Kody Mjelde, Brennan Gasser, and Cole Zunker winning 1-2-3 for the 15-18 boys.  Other winners in the backstroke were Maddie Mahoney, Alex Noonan, and Emily O’Rourke.

In the next event, the Individual Medley, The Riptide 11-12 girls and 13-14 boys also took the top three spots.  For the girls, Kara Smiley, Alexandra Schwarz, and Emma Grogan took 1-2-3, while for the boys it was Eric Thompson taking first, and Matthew Garcia and Sam Trotter with second and third.  Collin Feld, Gemma Pillsbury and Shannon Keeling also took first place in their Individual Medley Races.

In the Breaststroke, Collin Feld led the 9-10 boys, and it was Gemma Pillsbury taking first for the 13-14 girls.  In the 15-18 age groups, Shannon Keeling and Seth Zunker placed first.

The Riptide swam to first place in five of the Long Freestyle races.  Winning their events were Sean Cormican for the 9-10 boys, Maddie Mahoney and Alex Noonan for the 11-12 age group, Eric Thompson for the 13-14 boys, and Seth Zunker in the 15-18 boys.

When the waters calmed down, it was the Piranhas on top, with 356 points to the Riptide 292.  Coach Lynn Keeling commented that there were a couple of reasons for this, “We had a few DQs (disqualifications) and we have quite a few new, young swimmers.  Our strength is in our older age groups, particularly our 13-14 and 15-18 girls.  The kids just need to get in the pool and work hard.  I predict you will see a very different team by conference.”

The Baraboo Riptide hosts the Sauk Prairie Pool Sharks this Saturday.
